    Are Routines the Means to a More Mindful, Meaningful Life?

    I’ve been struggling with my routines lately, and consequently am not getting done all I want to each day. It’s a bit annoying, because back in December I had worked out a whole schedule for myself. One in which I got everything done that I wanted to in a day. Both things for my 9-5 desk job, and also things for my blog. I had plenty of time, more than enough time in fact. And not just for work related tasks, but for exercising, and personal care (face washing, showering). I had it all worked out, and for the month of December it did work out just as planned.  But…

    The other day, I saw a headline from Elephant Journal, something about “Dear lover, I’m holding space in my life for you, but I’m not waiting for you.” And I thought this was so profound.  On the surface, this is what you tell yourself, that’s what we all tell each other, right? Don’t wait for the guy, he’ll come when it’s time, when he’s ready. The right one will show up, and you won’t have to actually do anything at all.     I’ve been dreaming a lot lately. Often of trains, or cars, or other modes of transportation. Sometimes I’m driving, and sometimes I’m a passenger.     Morning Pages, Beneficial Even if Not Done as Prescribed?

    I’ve been writing morning pages for about two years. Not so consistently at first. I had never really journaled before that point, so it was all a really new experience for me, and the consistency part wasn’t my strong suit at first. I have found them to be very helpful though in time, in much the way Julia Cameron intended them to be: they’ve helped quiet all the negative voices swirling in my head, or at least slowed the spin. They’ve helped me get more focused on things, and able to hear my inner creative voice better. They’ve given me space to vent and question, organize and strategize, and overall helped me…

    I’ve taken a bit of time off but now, I‘m back. And ready to show up. For me. Cause the first, possibly the best habit I could have is showing up for myself. Which means keeping my promises to myself. And that may all sound a bit hokey.     Did you see my stats from last week?! I’m headed in the right direction! At first this week I was going to just walk in the afternoon. A 2.5 mile walk so definitely not a stroll, but I wouldn’t have been targeting my arms or my abs. I had just about talked myself out of doing the GrowWithJo videos because I’ve just never really liked doing exercise videos, really exercising for the sake of exercising at all.     I’ve been rethinking this whole going for a walk thing. And I realize that my problem isn’t in the moving part, it’s the getting out the door part. And I’ve tried (sort of, not really) to get out. During the day is hard. And I have always liked the morning better.
